Richard Lee Simpson, Sr., was born in Fincastle, Va., and educated at Washington and Lee University before beginning his dental education at the University of Maryland. Following his graduation in 1896, he set up a practice in Fincastle. The University College of Medicine (UCM) appointed Simpson to the faculty where he taught operative dentistry until he assumed the deanship of the dental school in 1910. When UCM and the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) merged in 1913, Simpson served as the initial dean of the combined institution. He stepped down from the dean’s role in 1915 and resumed teaching until his retirement in 1924.
