Canadian-born James Alexander Cameron Hoggan attended Trinity College in Toronto before graduating in 1901 from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons. He did a year of post-graduate work at the Angle School of Orthodontia in St. Louis, Mo., and was an early specialist in the emerging field of orthodontics. The Medical College of Virginia hired Hoggan to be a professor of orthodontia in 1912. Three years later he was elected dean of the School of Dentistry while maintaining his teaching assignments. Hoggan did much to stabilize the school and strengthen admission requirements during his decade as dean.
