A native of Detroit, Mich., John A. DiBiaggio received his undergraduate degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1954 and earned his dental degree from the University of Detroit four years later. He practiced dentistry for several years, served on the faculty at the University of Detroit, and earned a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Michigan. In 1967, he accepted a position as assistant dean in the College of Dentistry at the University of Kentucky. DiBiaggio succeeded Dr. Harry Lyons as dean of the VCU School of Dentistry in 1970. During his tenure, he oversaw the addition of the departments of periodontics and endodontics to the School of Dentistry. DiBiaggio left in 1976 to serve as vice president of health affairs at the University of Connecticut and in 1979 became the University’s president. He later served as president at Michigan State University and Tufts University.
