James Ralph McCauley was born in Union Ridge, N.C., and attended Elon College before moving to Richmond where he continued his studies at Smithdeal-Massey Business College. McCauley started his career at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) as a secretary in the business office.  Over the course of his forty-six years at MCV, he served as registrar, treasurer, secretary of the Board of Visitors, and an administrator in the hospital. McCauley was the college’s unofficial historian and he organized and indexed many of the institution’s important records.
