Past and Present Programs of Practical Nursing
The following list identifies the institutions that have offered programs in practical nursing in Virginia since 1946. The Norfolk City Schools and Leigh Memorial Hospital School of Practical Nursing opened in January of that year with the Richmond City Schools-Medical College of Virginia Hospitals School of Practical Nursing opening later in 1946. The pattern of co-sponsorship between a local school division and a community hospital continued as more schools developed. The largest expansion in the number of practical nursing programs occurred during the 1960s when 35 opened. This growth was the result of increased federal funding for vocational education and the construction of vocational-technical schools across the state. Sponsorship of the majority of the programs shifted to the public schools. In more recent years the expansion of programs has been in the community colleges and in proprietary schools.
