Past and Present Programs of Nursing

Listed below are Virginia institutions that have offered educational programs leading to nursing diplomas or college degrees in nursing since the late nineteenth century. St. Luke’s Hospital in Richmond offered the first formal diploma program beginning in 1886. Baccalaureate degrees in nursing first appeared in 1928 with the cooperative degree program at the Richmond Division of the College of William and Mary leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education program started with the creation of the Chair of Nursing at the University of Virginia in 1928. Hampton Institute, now Hampton University initiated the state’s first basic Baccalaureate program in 1931. In 1954, Virginia Intermont College in Bristol and the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College, now Norfolk State University, began pilot programs directed by Mildred Montag of Teachers College, Columbia University leading to an associate degree in nursing. The first masters program in nursing in Virginia began at the Medical College of Virginia, now Virginia Commonwealth University, in 1967. The University of Virginia created the state’s first doctoral nursing program in 1982.

Catawba Sanatorium (Roanoke) Program to train tuberculosis nurses opened in 1910 and closed in 1955

Chase City Hospital (Mecklenburg) Diploma Program opened in 1921 and closed in 1930.

Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital (Clifton Forge) Diploma program opened in 1916 and closed in 1972

Christopher Newport University (Newport News) Baccalaureate degree program opened in 1988; masters degree program began in 1995

Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley College of Health Sciences (Roanoke) Diploma program opened in 1965 and closed in 1985 when associate degree program began; baccalaureate degree program started in 1994.

Dabney S. Lancaster Community College (Clifton Forge) Associate degree program opened in 1971.

Danville Regional Medical Center School of Nursing (Danville) Diploma program opened in 1900. School also operated under the name of Danville General Hospital School of Nursing.

DePaul Medical Center (Norfolk) Diploma program opened in 1893 and closed in 1998; other names for the school were DePaul Hospital and St. Vincent DePaul Hospital School of Nursing.

Eastern Mennonite University (Harrisonburg) Baccalaureate degree program opened in 1966; other name was Eastern Mennonite College.

Edmunds Hospital (Danville) Diploma program opened in 1920 and closed in 1929.


Elizabeth Buxton Hospital (Newport News) opened in 1906 and closed in 1952.

George Mason University (Fairfax) Baccalaureate degree program started in 1974; masters degree begun in 1978; doctoral program added in 1986

Germanna Community College (Locust Grove) Associate degree program opened in 1970.

Grace Hospital (Richmond) Diploma program opened in 1912 and operated until 1932 when it closed for ten years; diploma program began again in 1942 and continued until the hospital closed in 1975.

Hampton Training School for Nurses: see Hampton University

Hampton University (Hampton) Diploma program opened as Hampton Training School of Nurses in 1891; diploma programs phased out in 1956; Baccalaureate degree program started at Hampton Institute in 1944; masters degree program started in 1976; other names include Dixie Hospital.

Home and Retreat Hospital (Lynchburg) Diploma program opened in 1886 and closed in 1919.

Hygiea Hospital (Richmond) Diploma program opened in 1918 and closed in 1927.

J. Sargeant Reynold Community College (Richmond) Associate degree program opened in 1973.

James Madison University (Harrisonburg) Baccalaureate degree program opened in 1980.

Jefferson Hospital (Roanoke) Diploma program opened in 1914 and closed in 1965 when the program merged with the Lewis-Gale Hospital to form Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.

John Tyler Community College (Chester) Associate degree program opened in 1967.

Johnston Memorial Hospital (Abingdon) Diploma program opened in 1912 and closed in 1971; other names include Abingdon Hospital, George Ben Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.

Johnston-Willis Hospital (Richmond) Diploma program opened in 1909 and closed in 1980.

King’s Daughters Hospital (Portsmouth): see Portsmouth General Hospital.

King’s Daughters Hospital (Staunton) Diploma program opened in 1898 and closed in 1932.

King’s Mountain Memorial (Bristol) Diploma program opened in 1923 and closed in 1932.

Lakeview Hospital (Suffolk) Diploma program opened in 1918 and closed in 1932; program reopened in 1944 and closed in 1951.

Lewis-Gale Hospital (Roanoke) Diploma program opened in 1909 and closed in 1965 when it merged with Jefferson Hospital to form Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.

Liberty University (Lynchburg) Baccalaureate degree program opened in 1988.

Loudoun Hospital (Leesburg) Diploma program opened in 1915 and closed in 1932.

Louise Obici Hospital (Suffolk) Diploma program opened in 1951.

Lynchburg College (Lynchburg) Baccalaureate degree program opened in 1978.

Lynchburg Hospital (Lynchburg) Diploma program opened in 1912 and merged with the Marshall Lodge Hospital in 1969; other name was City Hospital.

Lynchburg-Marshall Lodge Hospital (Lynchburg) Diploma program started in 1969 following the merger of Lynchburg and Marshall Lodge Hospitals.

Martha Jefferson Hospital (Charlottesville) Diploma program opened in 1904 and closed in 1932.

Memorial Hospital (Richmond) Diploma program, successor to the Old Dominion Hospital Training School, opened in 1903 and closed in 1922 when it was integrated into the Medical College of Virginia.

Memorial Hospital Mr. Sinai (Norfolk) Diploma program opened in 1927 and closed in 1936.

Mount Regis Sanatorium (Salem) Diploma opened in 1918 and closed in 1933.

Northampton-Accomack Hospital (Nassawadox) Diploma program opened in 1928 and closed in 1935; reopened in 1945 and continued until 1957.

Northern Virginia Community College (Annandale) Associate degree program opened in 1966.

Old Dominion Hospital (Richmond) Diploma program opened in 1895 and closed in 1903; the program was continued by the Memorial Hospital.

Old Dominion University (Norfolk) Baccalaureate degree program opened in 1963; masters degree program began in 1979; other name was Old Dominion College.

Parrish Memorial Hospital (Portsmouth) Diploma program opened in 1921 and closed in 1945 when it was absorbed by Marview Hospital.

Patrick Henry Community College (Martinsville) Associate degree program opened in 1970.

Piedmont Sanatorium (Burkeville) Training program for tuberculosis nurses opened in 1918 and continued until 1960; associate degree program opened in 1960-1967.

Piedmont Virginia Community College (Charlottesville) Associate degree program opened in 1972.

Portsmouth General Hospital (Portsmouth) Diploma program opened in 1905 and closed in 1986; other name King’s Daughters Hospital.

Provident Hospital (Danville) Diploma program opened in 1920 and closed at an unknown date.


Pulaski Hospital (Pulaski) Diploma program opened in 1928 and closed in 1934; reopened in 1948 and continued until 1962.

Radford Community Hospital (Radford) Diploma program opened in 1943 and closed in 1964.

Radford University (Radford) Baccalaureate degree program opened in 1969; masters degree program began in 1988; other name was Radford College.

Retreat for the Sick (Richmond) Diploma program opened in 1896 and closed in 1931.

Richmond Hospital (Richmond) Diploma program opened in 1898 and closed in 1920.
