X-Rays
World War I was the first war in which X-Ray technology was readily available. The X-Ray imaging system allowed doctors to accurately diagnose internal injuries and effectively locate bullet and shrapnel fragments.
Major William L. Peple described the X-Ray department at Base Hospital No. 45 as looking like “some weird alchemist’s shop with its pale green phosphorescent glow and the crackle of the sparker, and the tiny glow of the wires shimmering in the utter darkness.”
